Yesterday after school, our students had the valuable opportunity to attend a special lecture by Dr. Curtiss Takada Rooks as part of the Japanese American Storytelling Program (JASP), sponsored by the U.S.-Japan Council. The lecture was conducted entirely in English and offered students a meaningful chance to engage with global perspectives through language, history, and dialogue.
In his talk, Dr. Rooks shared the story of his Black Japanese mixed-roots family, highlighting the experiences of postwar international and interracial families within the Japanese American community. Through personal stories and historical reflection, he encouraged students to think about identity not as an “either/or” choice, but as something shaped by relationships, history, and connection. He reminded students that we are the sum of our relationships and that we stand on the shoulders of those who came before us.
Our students listened attentively and responded with great interest to Dr. Rooks’s message about cultivating meaningful relationships and honoring the efforts of previous generations. His unique perspective invited students to reflect on their own identities and consider how they can contribute positively to society in the future.

昨日の放課後、本校生徒たちは「ジョパニーズ・アメリカン・ストーリーテリング・プログラム（JASP）」の一環として、カティス・タカダ・ルークス博士による特別講義に参加するという貴重な機会に恵まれました。米日カウンシル（U.S.-Japan Council）の主催により、全編英語で行われたこの講義は、言語、歴史、そして対話を通じて、生徒たちが国際的な視点に触れる意義深い時間となりました。
講義の中でルークス博士は、アフリカ系アメリカ人と日本人のミックス・ルーツを持つご自身の家族の歩みを紹介され、戦後の日系アメリカ人コミュニティにおける国際・人種間家庭の経験について語られました。博士は、個人のアイデンティティとは「どちらか一方を選ぶ（either/or）」ものではなく、他者との関係性や歴史、そしてつながりによって形作られるものであるという考えを、ご自身の体験と歴史的考察を交えて伝えてくださいました。また、「私たちは人間関係の総和であり、先人たちの積み重ね（肩）の上に立っている存在である」という大切なメッセージを生徒たちに投げかけられました。
生徒たちは熱心に耳を傾け、「有意義な人間関係を育むこと」や「前世代の努力に敬意を払うこと」という博士の言葉に深い関心を寄せていました。博士独自の視点は、生徒たちにとって自分自身のアイデンティティを見つめ直し、将来どのように社会に貢献できるかを考えるきっかけとなりました。
生徒たちに、これからのグローバル教育の糧となる刺激的で示唆に富んだ学びの場を提供してくださったカティス・タカダ・ルークス博士、JASP、そして米日カウンシルに、心より感謝申し上げます。
