Today was another busy day! We went to the Union Avenue preschool, had a peace and social justice workshop, had three classes, and drank smoothies. We were so tired, but we learned many things which we don’t learn in Japan.
First, we went to the preschool. There were 4- or 5-year-old children . They were very cute and made us cheerful. We folded paper planes together. I noticed that at their age, they are interested in everything. I hadn’t experienced talking and playing with little children, so it was very fun.
Second, we learned about peace and social justice with Chaplain Morrison. The class topic was “what we carry inside”. I didn’t know what this meant, but Dr. Morrison taught us, so I understood. After a discussion we shared our ideas on paper and put them on the whiteboard.
Third, we joined a Japanese class. I answered Japanese questions which college students asked about Japan, my family, and this study tour. Then we folded paper cranes in Japanese with them. I had only explained how to fold in English so far, so it was a fresh experience.
Fourth, we had an online class with the Director of Wilmington College Peace Resource Center. This center is about the human experience of nuclear weapons. I was surprised because they have 40,000 books about the atomic bomb and many Japanese history books.
Fifth, we took an American Pop Culture, Social Media and Student Leadership Development class. We learned about these while taking a quiz. I understood the difference between Japanese and U.S. culture and how social media influences our culture through people, music, movies. We learned a lot in this class.
Finally, we drank smoothies on campus. They were very delicious. I ordered a “Hawaiian” smoothie. It tasted like bananas. I had never drunk one before, so it was a new experience.
Tomorrow is the last day when I will spend time with my host family, so I want to talk with them a lot and build an even deeper relationship.I am looking forward to tomorrow, too!
