On October 1st, we GI students cleaned up the West Beach of Motoujina. It was a warm day with bright sunshine. On the beach, we split into teams and picked up trash. When we cleaned up Miyajima last year, we saw a lot of trash from the oyster rafts, a famous product of Hiroshima prefecture, and similarly, there was a lot of that trash again this time. Of course, all the trash was created by human beings. We felt both the magnitude of the problem and a sense of responsibility.
What we collected was likely only a part of the trash overflowing along the 200-meter beach. However, we thought that continuing this activity every year, facing this issue, and taking action are incredibly important.
At the Culture Festival, we GI will present an exhibit about plastic waste based on this activity. Please stop by.

As GI students, we learn about global issues through our club activities. As part of this, we turn our attention to environmental problems each year by participating in beach cleanup efforts. This year, we conducted a trash pickup activity at Ujina Beach.
Before the activity, I wondered if there would really be enough trash for such a large group to clean up. However, after working for an hour, we still couldn’t collect all the litter, and I was once again reminded of the seriousness of environmental issues. Among the trash we collected were industrial waste materials such as styrofoam and plastic used for oyster farming, as well as everyday items like instant noodle containers and empty bottles—likely from our daily lives. I realized how the mindset of “It’s just me, it won’t matter” can unknowingly contribute to marine pollution.
Although it was tough working in the heat, cooperating with my teammates to clean up the beach was a valuable experience that made me feel how we can each take action for the sake of our planet. Through this experience, I learned that every individual’s actions are the first step in protecting the environment. I want to let go of the mindset of “It’s just me,” and continue to take action to help solve environmental issues.
We will also be showcasing this activity and what we’ve learned at our school’s cultural festival. If you are interested in environmental issues or in our efforts, please come take a look!
