In the afternoon, together with students from Hiroshima Peace Scholars program, we listened to Naomi Hirano-Omizo talk about the Japanese American internment camps. Naomi’s grandfather, Naojiro Hirano, was a first generation Japanese American who was actually incarcerated in the camps. We learned about his real experiences in the camps. In the discussion that followed, we talked with local students about the connection between Japanese American internment camps and world peace. Talking with them, we strongly felt that the fact of the internment camps existed should not be forgotten by the world. Also, afterwards, we went to Ala Moana Shopping Center, the largest shopping center in Hawaii, with the Hiroshima Peace Scholars students. The local Hawaiian food we ate with them was very delicious. By spending time with local students, we learned more about Hawaii. We hope to have another meaningful day tomorrow.
