Day 2 in Chicago

Jogakuin was founded because one man, Teikichi Sunamoto, believed in the necessity of women’s education. He had a dream and Jogakuin students continue to make his vision a reality today.

Throughout its history, the U.S. has been a country of immigrants and dreamers. The state of Illinois and the city of Chicago exemplify the American demographic of dreamers. One in seven Illinois residents is an immigrant and 20 percent of business owners in Chicago are immigrants.

We were blessed with gorgeous weather on our second day in Chicago and our first full day getting to know this great city, so full of history and dreams. Walking around downtown, our students were particularly impressed with the diversity of the city’s residents, fellow visitors, and the kindness shown to us by everyone.

We started the day by going to Willis Tower, now the second tallest building in the U.S. Its structural system was innovative and has influenced the way subsequent supertall buildings are designed. What excited our students the most were the spectacular views of Chicago from 103 floors up and the clear glass observation decks. Standing suspended in the air above the city, our Jogakuin students felt exhilarated by the vulnerability of their connection to the world we all share.

Next, we went to the world-class Art Institute of Chicago. Founded in 1879, it is one of the oldest and largest museums in the United States. The scope and depth of the collection is truly breathtaking. We focused on the work of the impressionists, post- impressionists, and a special Rodin exhibit. To bring light and life to the canvas and to cast bronze is the magic of these artists. They were truly inspiring to the students. Art is about sharing a vision. At Jogakuin, we hope to equip the students with the skills they need to share the light of their vision for a more peaceful world.
